I’m a complete hopeless romantic. Nothing makes me happier than reading stories where the characters fall in love. I don’t care if it’s love at first sight, the enemies-to-lovers slow burn, or the characters that realize their soulmate was their best friend all along, I will read them all. These YA romances are some of my favorite and are so adorable that once you’ve finished them you’ll want to pass them along to your younger siblings to read as well!

When I first watched Five Feet Apart, I think I used up an entire box of tissues. But even though this movie made me ugly cry an impressive amount, it also made me laugh and swoon at the adorable romance. If you loved the Five Feet Apart movie as much as I did, then you’ll definitely want to check out the books below!

Books to Read if You Loved Five Feet Apart

1. Forget Me Not by Alyson Derrick

Perfect for fans of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Five Feet Apart, this tender solo debut by the coauthor of New York Times bestseller She Gets the Girl is a romantic ode to the strength of love and the power of choosing each other, against odds and obstacles, again and again.

2. The Lucky List by Rachael Lippincott

Rachael Lippincott, coauthor of #1 New York Times bestseller Five Feet Apart, weaves a captivating, heartfelt love story about learning who you are, and who you love, when the person you’ve always shared yourself with is gone.

3. All This Time by Mikki Daughtry and Rachael Lippincott

All This Time is just a swoonworthy and heartbreaking as Five Feet Apart, which makes sense since it was written by the same authors. When Kyle finds himself in the hospital after a car accident, which leaves his girlfriend dead, he doesn’t know how to go on. But when he meet Marley, who’s dealing with her own grief, he begins to heal.

4. When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle

If you love a good star-crossed lovers story then you should pick up When You Were Mine, another Romeo & Juliet retelling. The difference between this book and Five Feet Apart is that it’s actually told from the perspective of Rosaline, Romeo’s former lover.

5. This Might Hurt a Bit by Doogie Horner

Want to laugh, cry, laugh some more, then laugh and cry at the same time? Then read this book! I think in many ways Kirby from This Might Hurt a Bit and Stella from Five Feet Apart are going through similar experiences and the antics that Kirby gets up to will definitely have you smiling.

6. Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippicott

Just in case you’ve only seen the movie, you should definitely check out the book! There are quite a few differences between the book and the movie that will make this feel like a brand-new read. But I’d still recommend having tissues next to you because this book is just as heartbreaking.

7. Our Year of Maybe by Rachel Lynn Solomon

This book is perfect for fans of Five Feet Apart. Sophie has always loved her best friend Peter and she finds out that she’s a match for the kidney transplant he needs, she doesn’t hesitate to donate one of her own. But Peter’s life post-transplant isn’t what either of them expected. He fears he’ll forever be indebted to Sophie and Sophie isn’t sure who she is without him. Then one heartbreaking night twists their relationship into something neither of them recognizes, leading them to question whether their friendship is even worth fighting for.

8. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

In Second Chance Summer, Taylor Edwards’ mostly normal family is devastated by the news that her father has cancer — and has only three or so months to live. Facing the diagnosis head on, her dad decides the family should go to their old beach house for the summer to finally spend real time together, and get to know one another again. Not to mention the beach house resides in the town where Taylor’s old best friend and first ever boyfriend live.

9. You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Similar to how the characters in Five Feet Apart have a hereditary disease called Cystic Fibrosis, and have to deal with its limitations with regard to their relationship, this book centers around twins who find out that one of them has inherited their mother’s Huntington’s disease. Adina and Tovah couldn’t be more different and the Huntington’s diagnosis pushes them farther apart as they wrestle with guilt, betrayal, and the unexpected thrill of first love.

After watching all of Outer Banks the night season one dropped on Netflix, two things were certain: 1. Pogues 4 life! And 2. I needed a second season immediately! Well, now that we’ve been BLESSED with seasons two and three, it’s time once again to fill the hole left by Outer Banks as we wait for season four. Sadly we have quite a bit of time before the next season comes out, so I’ve compiled a list of all the books to read if you, like me, are obsessed with OBX.

Books to Read If You’re OBSESSED with Outer Banks

1. I Killed Zoe Spanos by Kit Frick

Murder, wrongly-convicted killers, class differences, summery beach town vibes, the similarities between I Killed Zoe Spanos and OBX go on and on. So take a break from watching fan videos on Youtube and let this book fill the void left behind by Outer Banks.

2. The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Belly is in for an unforgettable summer, just like John B and the rest of the Pogues in Outer Banks. One of my favorite things about OBX is the budding love triangle between Kiara, JJ, and Pope that we can only hope to see more of in season 3. So why not read about an epic love triangle between Belly and brothers. Jeremiah and Conrad in The Summer I Turned Pretty.

3. In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens

One of the best things about Outer Banks is the treasure-hunting mystery. The twists and turns of discovering the Royal Merchant from season one are only amplified in season two as the Pogues hunt down the Cross of Santo Domingo. So if the seafaring adventures from Outer Banks are your favorite, you’ll love this book about a young prince who must rely on a mysterious stranger to save him when he is kidnapped by pirates during his coming-of-age tour.

4. Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch

Hunting down the lost city of Atlantis is the same as hunting down the Royal Merchant, right? Outer Banks perfectly combines summer beach town vibes with the high-risk hunt for gold, and don’t get me started on John B and Sarah Cameron’s relationship! So if you’re looking to fill the void left by season two of OBX, pick of Love & Olives, a story about a teen girl finding romance while trying to connect with her absent father in beautiful Santorini, Greece as he hunts for the lost city of Atlantis.

5. Retro by Sofia Lapuente and Jarrod Shusterman

Did the last three episodes of Outer Banks stress you out? Same. By the end of the last episode I was literally pacing back and forth while watching, because I couldn’t sit still. So if you’re looking for another heart-racing summery thriller, definitely check out Retro. Anna’s summer takes a turn for the worse when her best friend is found dead and she’s the prime suspect.

6. Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman

A book about pirates?! Whaat? But hear me out, the Pogues are literally looking for gold and they spend the majority of their time sailing around the Outer Banks. So this book is perfect for you if your favorite part of the show was the treasure hunting and seafaring.

7. Bad Things Happen Here by Rebecca Barrorw

An idyllic Island setting with beautiful oceanfront homes and a thrilling murder mystery is the perfect recipe for a good book. Alliances are made and secrets are revealed in Bad Things Happen Here, much like in Outer Banks!

8. Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

I won’t lie and say I didn’t swoon when John B professed to Sarah Cameron in the rain that they have something real after spending one day together. Well, in Today Tonight Tomorrow, rivals work together in a senior class game that takes them all around Seattle over the course of one night. By the end they’ll discover that they might actually be perfect for each other and in the immortal words of John B “That’s like Big Foot evidence rare!”

9. Phoebe Will Destroy You by Blake Nelson

I literally don’t know how many times I said, “JJ why did you bring the gun?!” while watching Outer Banks. And yet, there was something truly vulnerable and endearing to JJ’s self-destructive nature. You can find more of that vulnerability in both Phoebe and Nick in Phoebe Will Destroy You.

11. Start Here by Trish Doller

If you loved Sarah Cameron and Kiara’s friendship in Outer Banks, then you should definitely read Start Here. Willa and Taylor spend their summer on a life-changing sailing trip on which they will discover if their friendship is truly worth saving.

12. The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett

Theo and John B have quite a lot in common. Like having treasure-hunting fathers who have gone missing, bad guys chasing them, and not knowing whom to trust. Granted Theo is living in 1937 Europe and not 2020 North Carolina but trust me, this is definitely worth the read if you’re a fan of OBX.

A meet-cute in a bodega at 5am during a snow storm? Sounds like the perfect next book to jump into! When Leanna and Pablo meet at 5:00 a.m. at the bodega in the dead of winter it’s absurd to think they’d be A Thing. But as they discover who they are, who they want to be, and how to defy the deafening expectations of everyone else, Lee and Pab turn to each other. Which, of course, is when things get properly complicated.

7. Of Curses and Kisses by Sandhya Menon

Nothing says winter like the mountains of Colorado. So if you’re so over these hot summer days, like I am, pick up Of Curses and Kisses, a contemporary spin on Beauty and the Beast set at an elite boarding school in Aspen. Don’t miss the next book in the series, Of Princes and Promises!

Queen of the Tiles by Hanna Alkaf

They Wish They Were Us meets The Queen’s Gambit in the world of competitive Scrabble when a teen girl is forced to investigate the mysterious death of her best friend a year after the fact when her Instagram comes back to life with cryptic posts and messages.

CATALYST
13 points
noun: a person or thing that precipitates an event or change

When Najwa Bakri walks into her first Scrabble competition since her best friend’s death, it’s with the intention to heal and move on with her life. Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to choose the very same competition where said best friend, Trina Low, died. It might be even though Najwa’s trying to change, she’s not ready to give up Trina just yet.

But the same can’t be said for all the other competitors. With Trina, the Scrabble Queen herself, gone, the throne is empty, and her friends are eager to be the next reigning champion. All’s fair in love and Scrabble, but all bets are off when Trina’s formerly inactive Instagram starts posting again, with cryptic messages suggesting that maybe Trina’s death wasn’t as straightforward as everyone thought. And maybe someone at the competition had something to do with it.

As secrets are revealed and the true colors of her friends are shown, it’s up to Najwa to find out who’s behind these mysterious posts—not just to save Trina’s memory, but to save herself.

This is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves

We Need Diverse Books exclusively revealed the cover for This Is Why They Hate Us, check it out here along with annotated playlist curated by the author!

This fun, irreverent summer romp is Netflix’s Never Have I Ever meets What If It’s Us about a high school senior determined to get over his unrequited feelings for his best friend by getting under someone else.

Enrique “Quique” Luna has one goal this summer—get over his crush on Saleem Kanazi by pursuing his other romantic prospects. Never mind that he’s only out to his best friend, Fabiola. Never mind that he has absolutely zero game. And definitely forget the fact that good and kind and, not to mention, beautiful Saleem is leaving LA for the summer to meet a girl his parents are trying to set him up with.

Luckily, Quique’s prospects are each intriguing in their own ways. There’s stoner-jock Tyler Montana, who might be just as interested in Fabiola as he is in Quique; straitlaced senior class president, Ziggy Jackson; and Manny Zuniga, who keeps looking at Quique like he’s carne asada fresh off the grill. With all these choices, Quique is sure to forget about Saleem in no time.

But as the summer heats up and his deep-seated fears and anxieties boil over, Quique soon realizes that getting over one guy by getting under a bunch of others may not have been the best laid plan and living his truth can come at a high cost.

All the Right Reasons by Bethany Mangle

The Bachelor meets Gilmore Girls in this laugh-out-loud young adult romance about a girl who joins her mother on a reality dating show for single parents—only to fall for a contestant’s son.

Cara Hawn’s life fell apart after her father cheated on her mother and got remarried to a woman Cara can’t stand. When Cara accidentally posts a rant about her father online, it goes viral—and catches the attention of the TV producers behind a new reality dating show for single parent families.

The next thing Cara and her mother know, they’ve been cast as leads on the show and are whisked away to sunny Key West where they’re asked to narrow a field of suitors and their kids down to one winning pair. All of this is outside of Cara’s comfort zone, from the meddling producers to the camera-hungry contestants, especially as Cara and her mother begin to clash on which suitors are worth keeping around. And then comes Connor.

As the son of a contestant, Connor is decidedly off-limits. Except that he doesn’t fit in with the cutthroat atmosphere in all the same ways as Cara, and she can’t get him out of her head. Now Cara must juggle her growing feelings while dodging the cameras and helping her mom pick a bachelor they both love, or else risk fracturing their family even more for the sake of ratings. Maybe there’s a reason most people don’t date on TV.

6/30: Cover Reveals Day 3

Turning by Joy L. Smith

In this raw, searingly honest debut young adult novel, a former aspiring ballerina must confront her past in order to move forward from a devastating fall that leaves her without the use of her legs.

Genie used to fouetté across the stage. Now the only thing she’s turning are the wheels to her wheelchair. Genie was the star pupil at her exclusive New York dance school, with a bright future and endless possibilities before her. Now that the future she’s spent years building toward has been snatched away, she can’t stand to be reminded of it—even if it means isolating herself from her best friends and her mother. The only wish this Genie has is to be left alone.

But then she meets Kyle, who also has a “used to be.” Kyle used to tumble and flip on a gymnastics mat, but a traumatic brain injury has sent him to the same physical therapist that Genie sees. With Kyle’s support, along with her best friend’s insistence that Genie’s time at the barre isn’t over yet, Genie starts to see a new path—one where she doesn’t have to be alone and she finally has the strength to heal from the past.

But healing also means confronting. Confronting the booze her mother, a recovering alcoholic, has been hiding under the kitchen sink; the ex-boyfriend who was there the night of the fall and won’t leave her alone; and Genie’s biggest, most terrifying secret: the fact that the accident may not have been so accidental after all.

So This is Ever After by F.T. Lukens

Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this funny, subversive young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it…and to stay alive.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next.

As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead. Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

Howl by Shaun David Hutchinson

From critically acclaimed Shaun David Hutchinson comes a gritty and raw portrayal of the oftentimes traumatic experience of growing up.

Virgil Knox was attacked by a monster.

Of course, no one in Merritt believes him. Not even after he stumbled into the busy town center, bleeding, battered, and bruised, for everyone to see. He’d been drinking, they said. He was hanging out where he wasn’t supposed to, they said. It must’ve been a bear, or a badger, or a gator—definitely no monster.

Virgil doesn’t think it was any of those things. He’s positive it was a monster. But being the new kid in a town where everybody knows everybody is hard enough as it is without being the kid who’s afraid of monsters, so he tries to keep a low profile.

Except he knows the monster is still out there. And if he isn’t careful, Virgil’s afraid it’ll come back to finish him off, or worse—that he’ll become one himself.

Rue has no memory of how she ended up locked in a basement prison without her magic or her allies. But she’s a girl from the East Row. And girls from the East Row don’t give up. Girls from the East Row pick themselves back up when they fall. Girls from the East Row break themselves out.

But reuniting with her friends is only half the battle. When she finds them again, Rue makes a vow: she will find a way to return the magic that the Chancellor has stolen from her father’s people. She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick

She’s All That meets What If It’s Us in this swoon-worthy hate-to-love YA romantic comedy from #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Five Feet Apart Rachael Lippincott and debut writer Alyson Derrick.

Alex Blackwood is a little bit headstrong, with a dash of chaos and a whole lot of flirt. She knows how to get the girl. Keeping her on the other hand…not so much. Molly Parker has everything in her life totally in control, except for her complete awkwardness with just about anyone besides her mom. She knows she’s in love with the impossibly cool Cora Myers. She just…hasn’t actually talked to her yet.

Alex and Molly don’t belong on the same planet, let alone the same college campus. But when Alex, fresh off a bad (but hopefully not permanent) breakup, discovers Molly’s hidden crush as their paths cross the night before classes start, they realize they might have a common interest after all. Because maybe if Alex volunteers to help Molly learn how to get her dream girl to fall for her, she can prove to her ex that she’s not a selfish flirt. That she’s ready for an actual commitment. And while Alex is the last person Molly would ever think she could trust, she can’t deny Alex knows what she’s doing with girls, unlike her.

As the two embark on their five-step plans to get their girls to fall for them, though, they both begin to wonder if maybe they’re the ones falling…for each other.

There are few things better than curling up on the couch and putting on a classic movie rom-com. Except for maybe curling up on the couch with a rom-com book! I am absolutely in love with movie rom-coms (full disclosure, I’ve seen every movie on this list) so if you love them as much as I do, then these are the books for you!

The Perfect Book Recommendations for Fans of Movie Rom-Coms!

1. Bridget Jones’ Diary — Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Honestly, if you love any movie rom-com you will love this book. But! Wes, Liz’s annoyingly-hot neighbor, gives off strong Mark Darcy vibes. So if you fell in love with Colin Firth after watching Bridget Jones’ Dairy, you will absolutely adore this book. Also the Liz’s awkward moments can definitely rival Bridget Jones’.

2. You’ve Got Mail — Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

In this delightfully charming teen spin on You’ve Got Mail, the one guy Bailey Rydell can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet.

3. The Wedding Singer — We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Quinn wasn’t left at the alter but she was ghosted by her crush after she confessed her feelings to him in an email. Now she’s been dreading seeing him again almost as much as she dreads another summer playing the harp for her parents’ weddings. When the two meet again, they clash immediately but Quinn can’t deny her feelings for him are still there.

4. Notting Hill — Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi

When Leanna and Pablo meet at 5:00 a.m. at the bodega in the dead of winter it’s absurd to think they’d be A Thing. Almost as absurd as a movie star falling in love with the owner of a travel book shop. But as they discover who they are, who they want to be, and how to defy the deafening expectations of everyone else, Lee and Pab turn to each other. Which, of course, is when things get properly complicated.

5. What a Girl Wants — A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey

What a Girl Wants had all the ingredients of a great movie rom-com: an American girl traveling to England, a cute British boy to show her around, and, once again, Colin Firth. This book might not have Colin Firth but it has everything else! Not to mention, food descriptions that will make your mouth water.

6. Can’t Buy Me Love — Of Princes and Promises by Sandhya Menon

This delightful, romantic twist on The Frog Prince is the perfect read for you if you loved Can’t Buy Me Love. Just like Patrick Dempsey’s character, Rahul grapples between his new-found social standing and his love for popular girl Catrina in this second installment in the Rosetta’s Academy series.

7. Dirty Dancing — Where Secrets Lie by Eva V. Gibson

Star-crossed attraction, secrets being revealed, and the heat of summer. Believe me, this is one book you don’t want to put in a corner.

8. She’s the Man — Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto

Veronyka has always wanted to be a Phoenix Rider, so she disguises herself as a boy to join their ranks. If you loved She’s the Man, I promise you’ll love this book!

9. 10 Things I Hate about You — 10 Things I Hate about Pinky by Sandhya Menon

I mean, it’s in the name! This delightful follow-up to When Dimple Met Rishi follows Ashish’s friends Pinky and Samir as they pretend to date in order to achieve their individual goals, to disastrous and hilarious results.

10. When in Rome — To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Sure, Lara Jean didn’t go picking up random coins from a lovers fountain in Rome that resulted in multiple people falling in love with her, but her love letters DID get sent to all her former crushes. The chaos of the first book, as Lara Jean tries to avoid Josh by pretending to date Peter K, will definitely give you some When in Rome vibes.

11. There’s Something about Mary — Misfit in Love by S.K. Ali

More like: There’s Something about Janna! Janna hopes her brother’s wedding will be the perfect start to her own summer of love, but attractive new arrivals have her more confused than ever. Her summer of love is turning out to be super crowded and painfully unpredictable.

12. About Time — For All Time by Shanna Miles

About Time might be one of the best movie rom-coms ever made, if not THE best! In the movie, after an unfortunate time-travel incident, Tim’s meet-cute with the girl of his dreams never happens. So he has to travel back in time multiple times to get their meet-cute right and win her heart all over again. For All Time isn’t about time-traveling but it is an epic romance about two teens who relive their tragic love story over and over until they uncover what they must do to change their fate.  This book will make you believe in the power of love, just like the movie About Time will (seriously, go watch it).

13. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist — Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson

Taking place over the course of one night, two best friends, Kat and Stevie, are in for a hilarious adventure when they get lost in NYC. Both will get a wake-up call about their friendship, their choices…and finally discover what they really want for their future. That is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight.

14. The Wedding Date — Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao

Sure, there’s no way hiring a date to introduce to your parents will result in you falling in love with them. *Insert laughter here.* When Chloe starts to fall for the real Drew—who is unlike his fake persona she hired him to be—her carefully curated life begins to unravel. Can she figure out what she wants before she loses everything?

15. The Body Guard — Fall into Me by Mila Gray

Who can forget the movie that brought us Whitney’s version of I Will Always Love You? An unexpected and searing romance unfolds between a young recording artist and her ex-Marine bodyguard trying to outrun his difficult past in this wrenching novel from the author of Come Back to Me.

16. Love, Simon — The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch

Sky is already out in his small town in Michigan but having his promposal plans leaked in a deeply homophobic eblast is definitely a huge invasion of privacy. He’s fully prepared to drop out and skip town altogether—until his classmates give him a reason to fight back by turning his thirty-day promposal countdown into a school-wide hunt to expose the e-blast perpetrator. This witty, heartfelt, and ultimately hopeful debut novel is perfect for fans of Love, Simon.

17. Crazy Rich Asians — My Summer of Love and Misfortune by Lindsay Wong

Crazy Rich Asians meets Love & Gelato in this hilarious, quirky novel about a Chinese-American teen who is thrust into the decadent world of Beijing high society when she is sent away to spend the summer in China.

18. Under the Tuscan Sun — Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch

Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch

If Under the Tuscan Sun made you fall in love with Italy and all its little quirks, then Love & Gelato is definitely the book for you! A summer in Italy turns into a road trip across Tuscany in this sweeping book filled with romance, mystery, and adventure.

19. John Tucker Must Die — Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian

Who doesn’t love a good revenge story? Girls coming together to help girls….seek vengeance, it’s perfect.

20. Love & Basketball — These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

I know what you’re thinking, “how can a book about basketball and a Romeo & Juliet retelling be paired together?” Well, I’ll tell you. Both of these stories deal with first loves, second chances, and careers getting in the way of being with the person you love. I know that Roma betrayed Juliette but there’s a part of me that can just hear him saying “double or nothing.”

21. The Wedding Planner — Save the Date by Morgan Matson

Mary Fiore, from The Wedding Planner, and Charlie Grant know that planning a wedding isn’t easy. If you like reading about chaotic families and disastrous weddings then you should definitely read this book.

22. When Harry Met Sally — Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Similar to When Harry Met Sally, opposites attract in this fantastic novel about two boys, Ari and Dante, as their friendship slowly develops into something more. Once you’ve finished this book, be sure to check out the sequel Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World, which comes out October 12!
